This position is part of the Mycogen Seeds Field Station group. Mycogen is an affiliate of Dow AgroSciences, LLC (DAS). Under the general supervision of the Field Station Operations Leader, the Field Research Biologist will apply field breeding methodologies, computer database skills, field plot design expertise, interpersonal skills, agronomic expertise, and field equipment experience for corn the project. All actions will be conducted in a safe manner. Additionally this position will support the Station Operations Leader with administration and site specific projects to ensure location goals are met. The Field Research Biologist will work with the Field Station Operations Leader, Station Leader, Plant Breeder, and other Field Research Biologists and Technicians in a team oriented environment.
Responsibilities will include:
* Become proficient in the corn yield trial and nursery database including field setup, data loading, printing field books, packets and labels, data analysis and harvest advancement.
* Conduct various field research activities including, but not limited to, assisting in coordinating breeding efforts in summer and winter nurseries, establishing working relationships with grower cooperators and potential customers, planting, thinning, note-taking, harvesting, data analysis, reporting and sample shipping.
* Assist in marker projects and coordinate sampling schedules.
* Assist in data analysis and make selections in local breeding projects.
* Supervise and plan out duties for part-time personnel.
* Contribute leadership skills, ideas and support for all station initiatives including those relating to Human Resources, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), cross-functional teams and community development activities.
* Travel to outlying trial locations, winter nurseries, and other research stations and laboratories as needed.
* Ensure that DAS EH&S, Department of Transportation (DOT) and station regulations and policies are enforced.
This position is located in Huron, SD, USA.
* Bachelors or Masters degree in Agronomy, Crop Genetics, or a related field is required.
* Solid understanding of agronomy, statistics, and field equipment is highly desired.
* Previous experience with a crop breeding program is desirable.
* Demonstrated personal leadership, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills are required.
* Ability to take initiative and work effectively on teams is essential for success.
* Must have enthusiasm and aptitude for learning and continuous improvement of critical research activities.
* Well-developed computer skills are required.
