Dow Chemical Process Engineer / Scientist in Edina, Minnesota

The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting opportunity for a Process Engineer / Scientist located in Edina, MN. This position is within the Dow Water Solutions R&D Group, which is responsible for the process development of FILMTEC™ reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes and components for the water treatment industry. The researcher will:

  • Define technical solutions to reduce costs, improve yields through the use of engineering, chemistry and process knowledge.

  • Quickly screen technology alternatives, and choose the best cost/performance path.

  • Provide expertise through the use of computational tools and process equipment.

  • Apply economic-based evaluation to create value through process improvements.

  • Demonstrate expertise in laboratory, pilot plant or in-plant data generation and process development.

  • Use appropriate work process to drive product development projects

  • Demonstrate expertise in use of experimental methods and data handling.

  • Support new product development projects through scale-up into Manufacturing

  • Support Manufacturing through the troubleshooting of product yield

  • Interface with Supply Chain function on raw material selection and qualifications

  • Assess competitive technologies

  • Have an in-depth understanding of the patent and trade journal literature

  • Work with legal department to manage secrecy agreements, ensure freedom to practice and patent new products

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Materials Science

  • A solid foundation in:

o Mass Transfer

o Fluid Mechanics

o Transport Phenomena

o Thermodynamics of Chemical Engineering

o Differential Equations

o Numerical Analysis

  • 5 years of process R&D / manufacturing experience

  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills – position requires strong interaction in multi-functional team environment especially cross-functionally within Dow

  • Good skills in written and spoken English required

  • Must be a self-starter who takes the initiative to find solutions to technical challenges

  • Must show evidence of sound engineering judgment/intuition and have a track record of creating value through innovation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8 years process R&D / manufacturing experience

  • Process scale up experience
